Scottsdale, Arizona is a golfer's paradise. Pleasant weather, 42 golf courses in Scottsdale (174 courses in the area) and beautiful desert scenery account for Scottsdale's popularity among golfers; in fact, tourists account for 40% of the people who pay green fees in Scottsdale. Professional golfers also visit Scottsdale annually at one of the city's most venerable courses, the Tournament Player's Club(TPC) at Scottsdale.
The Professional Golf Association (PGA) established its first destination golf resort, a Tournament Players Club in 1980 at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville, Florida. The concept of the TPC courses is to give the average golfer an experience that delivers challenging golf and the level of service and enjoyment that a golf professional enjoys on the PGA Tour. Currently the PGA operates ten TPC courses around the country and TPC Scottsdale is one of the ten.
TPC Scottsdale hosts a national PGA Tour event, the FBR Open, at the end of January each year. TPC Scottsdale is located in the Sonora Desert and has as its backdrop the soaring McDowell Mountains. Not only is the scenery spectacular, the golf is equally impressive with two courses, The Stadium Course and the brand new Champions Course. The Stadium Course is where the FBR Open is held and it was the first TPC Scottsdale course built in 1986. The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale was designed by Pro Tom Weiskopf and architect Jay Morrish. The course is a 7,216 yards with a par of 71 and it is considered challenging with multiple water hazards, undulating fairways and greens that slope deceivingly.
Playing at the TPC Scottsdale golf course is pricey during high season of December through April when the weather is optimal. The rate for 18 holes is $249 and Twilight rates are $178.50. Players willing to take on the heat of summer can play the TPC Scottsdale for only $67 and rates vary throughout the rest of the year, all lower than high season. The TPC Scottsdale fees include green fees, cart, practice balls at the range, a yardage book, bag tag and a Forecaddie. A Forecaddie is a person who does not carry the clubs, but who accompanies the group to help keep play moving along by locating balls that go into the rough.
The TPC Scottsdale is located just northeast of Phoenix, and therefore very easy to fly to. Scottsdale has excellent tourist accommodations. In close proximity to TPC Scottsdale are the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, the Scottsdale Marriott at McDowell Mountain and Resort Suites of Scottsdale. Each of these choices provides superior luxury and amenities to make a trip the TPC Scottsdale a memorable and enjoyable experience.
Not only is the TPC Scottsdale an excellent place to play golf, it is also home to one of the best golf schools in the country. The Nicklaus/Flick Game Improvement school is based on teaching techniques developed by Jack Nicklaus and lessons are offered from February to May each year. PGA Academy programs are also offered with two to five day programs available. Private lessons are always an option and the course Pro Shop can provide information to connect golfers with a high quality instructor.
Scottsdale, Arizona provides everything the golfer looks for in a golf vacation. The Suguaro studded scenery is breathtaking, golf courses are painted into the desert landscape, the dry climate and clean air are inviting. Every detail has been attended to ensure that visitors thoroughly enjoy themselves. TPC Scottsdale is the centerpiece of the golf culture that defines Scottsdale.
